Philosophical Attitude
“Atitude Filosófica” [Philosophical Attitude in a loose translation] is a collection of philosophy textbooks designed for elementary school students aged between 11 and 14 years old. The collection’s concept revolves around teaching philosophy through the everyday experiences of teenagers. The publisher invited me to design the book covers and develop a graphic project for the interior pages which would serve as a guide for another design team to produce the final materials. The design briefing pointed to a graphic concept that would convey the critical thinking of philosophy while blending in with the digital universe in which young people are immersed. Therefore, the graphic design was intended to employ a scrapbook aesthetic with illustrations, varied typography, and graphic elements that pop off the pages.
Philosophical thought is translated here through concentric geometric patterns that tend toward depth. Thus, the Noka typeface (Blackletra) was chosen for titles as it’s designed based on geometric shapes and offers a wide range of weight variations. The scrapbook aesthetic is then crafted using flat design elements. The GT Maru Emoji typeface (Grilli Type), featuring spirited and playful icons, is adopted to accompany vignettes for various sections. For image creation, I recommend three artists: Catarina Bessel, known for her provocative collages, signs the illustrations for the covers and a significant portion of the internal pages; Leo Vargas and Jônatas Moreira, with their fresh and relatable artistic style, also make their mark within the youth-oriented universe.
