The last of the copyists

This novel begins with an essay on the 16th-century copyist Ângelo Vergécio, whose handwriting inspired the Garamond typeface. A mystery surrounding his life drives, in the 21st century, the story of friendship between a proofreader and an illustrator who meet at a small publishing house. Their platonic relationship seems to materialize through their shared obsession with uncovering details of Vergécio’s life. The passage of time is also a hallmark of the novel, which depicts the extinction of two professions: the copyist at the end of the Middle Ages and the literary proofreader during the transition from the analog to the digital era. The cover image is composed of fragments of Garamond type scattered throughout the composition, to the point of becoming barely recognizable.
